Submission Principles & Guidelines
Submission Principles
At Chrysalism, we endeavor to innovate and improve the submission process.
Here’s how:
I. Submissions to Chrysalism are free.
We do not charge submission fees or require payment from submitters.
We aim to reassure all writers that their work was read, seen, and valued by providing opt-in feedback that is intended to be supportive, constructive, and specific.
II. Submitters can opt in to receive free personalized feedback, regardless of publication decision.
III. Submissions to Chrysalism will be responded to within two months.
We guarantee prompt and personalized correspondence with every writer who submits to us. We can achieve this by working closely with our committed team of intern readers and capping submissions based on the size of that team (we expect allowing 25-50 submissions per team member).
We want to provide youth with as safe and supportive a space for their writing as possible, and we believe we can do so by having youth work submitted and published alongside their similarly-aged peers. See submission guidelines below for more details.
VI. Writers 18 and under have separate, age-appropriate pathways towards publication.
Submission Guidelines
-
This category is strictly celebratory. Poems submitted following all guidelines below will be published online and highlighted through social media, website banners, and/or promotional materials.
The student must be between 6-13 years old at the date of submission.
Work in this category may only be submitted by an educator on behalf of the student.
All work submitted for this category must be emailed to chrysalismyouthsubmissions@gmail.com as a Word Document or PDF. Work submitted in the wrong category or as the wrong file type will not be considered for publication. Please make the subject of your email your (the educator’s) name, school, city, state, and student’s name (for example: subject: John Smith, Central Elementary school, Detroit, MI, Jacob Jones).
The email including the submission must include a signed permission slip from the student’s parent or guardian. We cannot consider or publish work without a signed permission slip.
All work in this category is accepted up to the submissions cap based off the size of our team of readers and interns (we expect allowing between 25-50 submissions per team member) per reading period. As such, we ask that only contacted schools/educators send us work during each submissions period. Our aim is to rotate to different school districts each submission period. If you want your school and/or students to be eligible for an upcoming submission period, please email chrysalismyouthsubmissions@gmail.com to get in touch.

All writers in this category must be between the ages of 14-18 years old at the time of submission. For this category, we primarily promote and solicit from Midwestern schools; however, we gladly accept submissions from everywhere.
Poetry submissions can be no longer than 5 pages. If there are multiple poems, each poem should begin on a new page.
While we hope to expand and accept other genres in the future, we only accept poetry submissions at this time.
All work must be original, unpublished work that has been written by the submitter. This, as well as submitting in the proper age range, is on the honor system. If we find that the work is plagiarized, AI-generated, or that you are not the age specified for this category, we will remove your work from the site and ask you to refrain from future submissions.
We allow simultaneous submissions. If your work is accepted elsewhere, let us know as soon as you find out by emailing chrysalismyyaj@gmail.com.
We have a cap on submissions based off the size of our team of readers and interns (we expect allowing between 25-50 submissions per team member per reading period) to ensure our response time of two months. Once we reach our cap, we will encourage you to submit during our next submissions period. We cannot hold spaces for submissions outside of the cap.
We do not charge for submissions, but we gladly accept donations. Donations will be used to pay our volunteer readers, fund our scholarships, and guarantee our next year’s issue.
We accept work written in languages other than English provided that you submit the English translation alongside it for our readers. Should the poem be accepted, both iterations of the poem will be published.

All writers in this category should be at least 19 years old at the time of submission. Writers younger than 19 may submit if they feel their work is ready; however, due to this being our most competitive category, we ask they submit to a more age-specific category.
